The Year of the Snake(zodiac) 2025! Go to temples and shrines associated with snakes! 🐍

2025 is the year of the snake.

2025 is the Year of the Snake.
The year of the snake is said to be a year of change and growth, with many opportunities for progress.

Since ancient times, snakes have been considered sacred in many parts of the world.
Their shedding has been a symbol of resurrection and prosperity.
In Kyoto, there are many temples and shrines associated with dragons,
but there are also places associated with snakes, which we will introduce in this column.

Temples and shrines associated with snakes in Kyoto

Nittaiji Temple

Nittaiji Temple is a temple of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism. It is in charge of the “Snake” of the Rakuyo Twelve Zodiac Signs Myoken Tour, a group of temples dedicated to Myoken Bosatsu (Bodhisattva).
It is located on the way to Kiyomizu-dera Temple after getting off at the Kiyomizu-michi bus stop.
So why not stop by when strolling around Kiyomizu-dera Temple or Yasaka area?

Akamon Shokakuji Temple White Snake Benzaiten

Akamon Shokakuji Temple is a Jodo sect temple located on back of teramachi Street, where the temples of Shijo-Kawaramachi gather.
The temple is marked by a large red lantern and is called “Akamon-san” (meaning “Red Gate-san”).

Tenryu Hakuja Benzaiten Shrine

It is located behind the Kumano Wakaoji Shrine along the Philosophical Path.
There is a waterfall just behind the shrine, and the white cascade of water from the waterfall looks just like a snake.
